How Assistants work\u00a0<\/a><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Assistants API is designed to help developers build powerful AI assistants capable of performing a variety of tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Assistants API is in beta<\/strong> and we are actively working on adding more functionality. Share your feedback in our Developer Forum<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Assistants can call OpenAI\u2019s\u00a0models<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with specific instructions to tune their personality and capabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Assistants can access\u00a0multiple tools in parallel<\/strong>. These can be both OpenAI-hosted tools \u2014\u00a0like\u00a0code_interpreter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0file_search<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 or tools you build \/ host (via\u00a0function calling<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Assistants can access\u00a0persistent Threads<\/strong>. Threads simplify AI application development by storing message history and truncating it when the conversation gets too long for the model\u2019s context length. You create a Thread once, and simply append Messages to it as your users reply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Assistants can access files in several formats \u2014 either as part of their creation or as part of Threads between Assistants and users. When using tools, Assistants can also create files (e.g., images, spreadsheets, etc) and cite files they reference in the Messages they create.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Run<\/td>An invocation of an Assistant on a Thread. The Assistant uses its configuration and the Thread\u2019s Messages to perform tasks by calling models and tools. As part of a Run, the Assistant appends Messages to the Thread.<\/td><\/tr>
    Run Step<\/td>A detailed list of steps the Assistant took as part of a Run. An Assistant can call tools or create Messages during its run.
